CARING FOR YOUR GEMS
The care and quality of your jewelry is extremely important to us. That is why with every Made by Mermaids purchase you receive a "How to care for your Gems of the Sea" card. There are many factors that can influence the wear and tear of your jewelry. The most important thing to remember is jewelry is delicate. Therefore the amount of time and effort you put into caring for your gems will in turn elongate its quality for years to come.
GOLD PLATED / GOLD FILLED. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Gold Plating or Gold Filled is sterling silver with 2.5 microns of gold plate over the top, however over time, the gold plating will start to come off revealing the silver underneath. Unfortunately this is the nature of the product, however there are things we can do to help the gold plate stay for as long as possible!
HOW LONG SHOULD GOLD PLATING LAST?
If you look after your Gems of the Sea well and follow our guide on caring for it properly, gold plating can last for years. However with rings, you may find the plate starts to wear off after 6 months of continuous wear. We will not be able to refund on your items if this happens, as this isn't a fault in the product, but rather the nature of wear and tear.
STERLING SILVER / BRASS / GUNMETAL
Keeping the quality and shine intact for your Sterling, Brass or Gunmetal jewelry piece is entirely up to how you handle it! Keep your jewelry away from water and avoid wearing while working out. Do your best to keep the jewelry out of high temperatures and try every so often to wipe the piece with a jewelry cloth.
We strongly advise that you remove your Gems of the Sea when washing your hands, showering or swimming because water and chemicals (especially chlorine) can affect the longevity of the gold plating, encourage silver to tarnish and dull gemstones. This is especially important for rings, as they suffer wear and tear much more than other Jewelry types since we use our hands for everything we do.
ALWAYS apply makeup, hair spray, lotions, moisturizers and perfume BEFORE putting on your Gems of the Sea. The chemicals from these products can strongly affect the beauty and overall shine of your new Gem!
Never use a polishing agent or strong compounds to clean your jewelry as these will wear away the layers of gold VERY quickly.
Please take care of your jewelry by storing it away in small plastic bags or within a jewelry armoire with separate jewelry spacing. A small plastic bag is always provided with your purchase along with a soft velour bag to keep your Gem safe for years to come.
